The Blurry Image Fix Guide That Should've Come in the Box
I've been installing projectors for fifteen years, and I've drilled more holes in ceilings than I care to count. My own 120-inch screen in the basement has survived three different projectors, a lamp replacement, and my 70-pound lab Gus deciding the AV cabinet was his personal scratching post. Blurry images are the number one call I get from friends who've just mounted their first unit. Nine times out of ten, it's not the projector. It's something stupid and fixable.
The fix for a blurry projector image is almost never the projector itself. It's focus, distance, keystone, or a dirty lens. Here's how to diagnose each one in under ten minutes.

How I Tested
I've mounted projectors in living rooms, basements, bedrooms, and one regrettable backyard setup that ended with a projector tipped over by a gust of wind. For this guide, I went through my own troubleshooting checklist on three projectors I've lived with: the Epson 2150, a budget Vankyo that taught me patience, and the ViewSonic PX701-4K I'm currently testing. I measured throw distances with a tape measure, not my eyes. I checked focus patterns with a test card. I counted fan noise in decibels from the couch, because that's the only honest way to review a projector.
Here's what actually works when your image looks like a smeared watercolor.
Focus First, Blame the Projector Second
The most common fix is the dumbest one. The focus ring on most projectors is on the lens barrel. It's a manual ring you twist. Every single person I've helped troubleshoot has skipped this step because they assumed the autofocus did it for them. Budget projectors don't have autofocus. The Epson 2150 doesn't have autofocus. The ViewSonic PX701-4K doesn't have autofocus. If you bought a projector under $1,500, you're twisting that ring by hand.
Display a test pattern or a screen with text. A menu screen works. Twist the focus ring slowly until the text at the center is crisp. Then check the corners. If the corners are sharp but the center is soft, you're at the wrong focal distance. If the center is sharp but the corners are soft, that's normal on budget optics. You can't fix corner softness on a $300 projector. You just live with it.
I had a client who called me in a panic because his new projector was "broken." Blurry text, washed out image, looked terrible. I drove over, twisted the focus ring one quarter turn, and it was perfect. He'd been watching a blurry screen for three weeks because he never touched the lens. Don't be that guy.
The Throw Ratio Math You Can't Skip
I've remounted more projectors for people who skipped the throw ratio math than any other single mistake. If your image is too big for the screen, or too small, or the projector has to sit so far back that the image is soft, that's throw ratio. It's the distance from the lens to the screen divided by the screen width. Get it wrong and you're either zoomed in digitally (which kills sharpness) or physically remounting the unit.
The Epson 2150 has a throw ratio of 1.32 to 2.15. At 10 feet from the screen, you get an image between 67 and 109 inches diagonal. At 12 feet, you're at 80 to 131 inches. The ViewSonic PX701-4K is 1.5 to 1.65, which means at 10 feet you're stuck at roughly 100 to 110 inches. If you have a 120-inch screen and a 10-foot ceiling, the ViewSonic won't fill it. You need more distance or a shorter throw lens.
Measure your room before you buy. I measured wrong on my first mount. Drilled holes, ran cables, then realized the image was 89 inches when I wanted 110. Learn from my mistake. Tape measure first, drill second.
Keystone Correction is a Crutch
Digital keystone correction is the most overused feature in budget projectors. It's also the most destructive to image sharpness. When you tilt the projector up or down to hit the screen, you get a trapezoid shape. Keystone squishes that back into a rectangle. The problem is it does this by scaling parts of the image non-uniformly. Text at the top of the screen will be sharp while text at the bottom is smeared.
I see this constantly. People mount the projector on a shelf, tilt it down toward the screen, then crank keystone to fix the shape. The result is a blurry mess that they blame on the projector. The fix is to mount the projector level with the center of the screen. Use lens shift if your projector has it. The Epson 2150 has vertical lens shift. The ViewSonic PX701-4K does not. If you have no lens shift, mount the projector so the lens is at the same height as the top or bottom of the screen, then use vertical keystone as a last resort.
One verified buyer on the ViewSonic wrote in March: "Used keystone to fix a tilted mount. Text is blurry at the top. My fault, not the projector's." That matches my experience. Keystone is a crutch, not a feature.
The Dirty Lens Nobody Checks
If your image looks hazy everywhere, not just at the edges, check the lens. Projectors sit in rooms that accumulate dust. My basement is a dust magnet, and after six months the lens on my Epson collects a film that softens everything. A microfiber cloth and a few seconds of gentle wiping fixes it.
I had a client who thought his $800 projector was dying. The image had gotten progressively softer over a year. He was ready to buy a new one. I wiped the lens with a cloth, and it looked brand new. He was embarrassed. I was not. This happens more often than you'd think.
Also check the glass behind the lens. Some projectors have a dust shield that collects particles. If you're comfortable opening the case, a can of compressed air can clear it. If you're not comfortable, don't open it. Just wipe the exterior lens and move on.
The Cheap Projector Trap
Budget projectors under $300 are a different beast. The Vankyo and Wimius units I've tested have plastic lenses that are softer by design. You can focus them perfectly and they'll still look soft at 100 inches. The lens quality is the bottleneck, not your installation.
One verified buyer on a Vankyo model wrote in April: "Image is blurry even after focusing. Tried everything. Just a cheap lens." That matches what I've seen. At $200, you're getting a toy that's fine for a kids' room or a backyard movie night. If you're putting it in a dedicated room and expecting sharp text, save for the $400 to $700 tier. The Epson 2150 at $650 is the default recommendation for a reason. The lens is genuinely good.
Should You Buy a New Projector?
If you've checked focus, measured throw distance, leveled the mount, and wiped the lens, and the image is still blurry, then yes, the projector might be the problem. But that's the last step, not the first.
The ViewSonic PX701-4K I'm testing right now is sharp at 100 inches with proper placement. The Epson 2150 is sharp at 120 inches. The Vankyo, even at 80 inches, was mediocre. Buy once, cry once. Skip the cheap trap, measure your room, mount it level, and twist the focus ring. That's the whole guide.
